There is no evidence I'm aware of indicating that either birth control pills or marijuana causes prolactinoma tumors. Marijuana does not effect prolactin levels, nor cause tumor growth. If a prolactinoma tumor was already present, in theory certain hormones might cause it to grow, at least in specific cases, possibly gender-specific. E.g. there's some evidence that exposing male prolactinoma patients to high estrogen levels might cause tumor growth. For females, I haven't seen any research papers indicating this. Prolactinoma patient should discuss with their endocrinologist medications that might inadvertently increase prolactin levels as a side effect. Your goal is to control prolactin level, and several prescription medications can increase this. In general the cause of prolactinomas is unknown. While it may have a genetic component, this currently seems idiopathic -- it's spontaneous, not inherited. There is some limited evidence that certain life stress patterns can cause it in individuals already genetically predisposed. |
