I've learned that doctors have different styles. My pcp has his nurse call and tells you to make an appt when your medications need refilling. My pcp also has his nurse call when you have lab results come in, so he can go over them in person. My private endo typically orders labs when I see him, and he send copies of the labs in the mail. He lets me ponder and research issues on my own. I like that. I can quiz him and I learn alot about my care. My neuroendo never discusses exact lab results with me, preferring to self-manage my endocrine care. He and his staff prefers phone and is quick to e-mail to ask me to call to discuss labs etc... One of my endocrinologists from days gone by wouldn't talk with me at all after the appointment, so what I would do is send him a letter before the appointment so we would cover all of my concerns during the appt so he would be prepared. I knew I wouldn't see him for another six months or a year, so I needed to make it count. I'd pick up the physician notes and lab results from medical records. One of my endocrinologists from days gone by preferred to discuss lab results in person so I knew what the labs meant, and what the next steps were. I felt like I was part of the plan and not part of a problem. Point is... relationships with doctors are two way people relationships. You need to figure out how to make that relationship work. Sometimes they don't.. and when they don't see if you can put together one that does. Good luck! |
