Muscle Weakness

Hi! I think you may be referring to the post I placed in the acromegaly section. I am also having difficulty with significant muscle weakness. My rheumatologist found a wonderful section in a book about the rheumatological effects of diseases of different systems published in 2001. There is a chapter on the rheumatological effects of dseases of the endrocrine system which has a section of the effects of acromegaly. In this section they discuss the effects of excessive GH and state that this can lead to myopathy (I think this is the word you are looking for - pathology of the muscles)/ neuropathy (pathology of the nerves and arthropathy (pathology of the joints). They state that the myopathy is more related to the length of time that the muscles are exposed to excessive GH rather than how high the GH level are elevated. Furthermore it is stated that the weakness may not completely improve when the GH level are normalized even after 2 years. There is a reference but unfortunately I did not copy the bibliography.

Note that prednisone can also lead to muscle weakness so you have a couple of things going on. I had a friend who is a physical therapist perform a manual muscle test which is a test to quantify weakness. The test is fairly gross but still demonstrated significant weakness in my hips (3+/5 meaning that I can only resist the weight of a hand placed on my leg when placed in a position where the leg is moving against gravity.). I also have significant functional impairments such as inability to step up a single step or curb without a cane or rail / difficulty walking up slight inclines (crossing the street) / difficulty rising from a seated position (I almost got stuck on a standard toilet in a public bathroom - Oh! the embarrassment! I work several jobs and had to go on leave from one as I do not feel safe because of the weakness.). I have been getting mixed messages about this and plan to pin the endos down next week. Initially my IGF-1 was >1100 / 6 weeks after surgery >600' 12 weeks after surgery >400 but the weakness seems to be getting worse.
