I believe it’s normal for there to be a few months lapse before the levels start to come down. (My doctor’s were shocked and ecstatic when mine came down within a month). It is a very good sign that the tumor can no longer be seen on an MRI and that alone says no further surgery is necessary in the foreseeable future. Even if there still is residual tumor that continues to produce excess GH, you can/should be given a medication like Somavert to control the Acromegaly. With a tumor so tiny it can’t be seen on an MRI, surgery would not be worth the risks.

That being said, I totally understand that you’re just anxious to get rid of the problem once and for all. J You should definitely research and inform yourself before making big decisions though. I had 5 weeks of radiation immediately following surgery although it’s normal to wait first to see how effective the surgery was (my doctor wanted to treat aggressively because I was so young, the tumor so large and he was unable to safely remove the whole thing). If I knew then what I know now about the side effects however, I would not have agreed to it. I would have waited first to see if the surgery was successful.

Subject: Hi GH and IGF-1 after surgery

Hi. I was diagnosed with acromegaly in the beginning of February (tumor was 11 mm.) and had a surgery on 03/08/05. I still have high IGF-1 and GH when I was tested five weeks after surgery. There is no sign of residual tumor on MRI. I read about new endoscopic surgery that provides better results. I would like to know if it is possible to perform another surgery using this fully endoscopic approach. If it is possible, then how soon it can be done from the moment of the last surgery. I also had a sinus surgery for chronic sinusitis on 12/21/04.
