My pituitary gland has probably been limping along since my last delivery 12 years ago. It just have just given out last year. When I finally found out that my TSH was almost non-existent, they then tested my FSH and LH levels. Those levels were so low that the doctor told me they were just about non-existent. At that time, they questioned my history and the possibility of Sheehan's syndrome. If I understand the doctors correctly you can conclusively diagnose Sheehan's from a pituitary MRI. I had one performed, and it was interpretted to be normal. However, it wasn't really read correctly. So for another couple of months they were pretty baffled. Dr. Blevins recognized on my MRI that I have a partially empty sella which I guess makes a positive dignosis of the Sheehan's. The best advice I can give you is to tell you that you must be aggressive with your treatment. No one knows you better than you do. You know when things are wrong, and don't ever doubt yourself. When I was in the midst of tyring to get diagnosed I would come home from doctor appointments so disappointed. Toward the end of my treatment in St. Louis, I made another visit to see the internist that I would see when my endo was booked up with appointments. I'll never forget what she told me at that last appointment that I saw her. I said to her, I feel so bad. Can we go back over my history again to see if I've let something out. I told her that my gynocologist still questioned whether I might have Sheehan's. She was rather abrupt with me. She told me, NO, that is impossible. We ruled that out with your MRI, it was normal. Part of me just wants to send a note to say NO, YOU were wrong! Some dork mis-read my MRI! You are your best advocate! In reading the stories of other pituitary patients, we often are overlooked and written off by doctors who can't diagnose us. Persistence pays off for sure. I'd like to stay in touch with you. Please let me know how your appointment turns out. When do you go? |
