Judy, The serum cortisol test is just a spot test to see if you are making cortisol. They hydrocortisone is a cortisol replacement. Typically, the physicians do a baseline cortisol post op and if it is too low post op, they put you on replacement (if you don't have this, it can be life-threatining). At about 6 weeks post op (cushings protocol is different), you should be on 20mg hydro or less or equivalent, the doctors have you withhold your meds 24hrs, do a 8 am serum cortisol, and an acth stimulation test. If the tests come back normal, you can stop the hydro. You can look at your pathology report to see if your tumor was GH or ACTH secreting. Your endo should have run those baseline screening tests for the different kinds of pituitary tumors before you ever had surgery. You need to talk with your endocrine specialist about the comments the doctor made... and yes, if you don't have one, get one. ![]() Try not to worry. Minnie |
