dental problems

I recently went to the dentist after a very long period of not going to the dentist (very long)and was sent to an oral surgeon to have a tooth extracted. When the surgeon found out I had radiation treatments 22 years ago for my pit. tumor, she said she couldn't do the extraction without knowing how many rads I received in the lower jaw. The reason she gave me was something call-osteonacropathy. She explaned the lower jaw doesn't have the same blood flow through it as the upper, so the radiation doesn't disappate as effectively. She said if I had a lot of rads to the lower jaw, the wound where the tooth is removed wouldn't heal. And in order to get it to heal, I would have to go through 30 days of hyperbaric chamber treatments.

This is the first I've every heard of this since my radiation treatments in 1984. Has anyone ever encountered this?

Thanks,

Mike
