Hi PT, Interesting observation... This is VERY important because several cases have been compromised because of inexperienced Fellows performing the surgeries. While I believe that fellows and interns need practice and experience, I am not willing to be their guinea pig for brain surgery. None of us should have to be guinea pigs for such an important surgery. I will not allow "ex-terns" to draw my blood because it is hard enough for seasoned professionals to do (average is 4-5 sticks)-there is no way I am allowing any inexperienced fellows to touch my brain. You can refuse to allow ANY fellows or interns to participate in your surgery/post-op care. And I advise you do. Make sure your refusal is in writing and make sure that the neurosurgeon is aware of your instructions. It is your body, your life, and you are entitled to the best care possible with experienced physicians. |
