My Dad had a Nonfunctioning Pituitary Macroadenoma removed through the Transphenoidal approach in Sept. 2005. He had an mri about 10 weeks after his surgery and the entire tumor has grown back. The doctor insists that it is benign, but really fast growing. He is sceduled for a craniotomy on Jan. 13, 2006 and we're all very nervous about it. There is talk about Gamma Knife surgery sometime after the craniotomy...depending on the proximity to the optic nerve. Has anyone experienced a relentless tumor that just grows like a weed?!!! The neurosurgeon was very shocked as well. What advice do you have for us? Also, I am very confused about X-knife Stereotactic Radiosurgery, Gamma Knife and Cyber Knife. Are they all the same or is one better? Have any of you had a craniotomy? How does the recovery compare to the Transphenoidal surgery?
