Thanks Daryl and Meri!

Well, Friday 9-1-06, they did their first case in the BrainSUITE at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. I'll upload a picture(s) of the O.R. This has been a 3 1/2 year project from original discussions to first surgery. They broadcast the first case craniotomy via MDACC intranet. After they finished resecting the tumor, I went on over to the O.R. myself. The surgeon had asked me the night before to please attend the first surgery and observe from the control room, but I decided to "stay out of the way" until the surgery was well underway. One of the best feelings was seeing that mid surgery scan on the MRI showing that the surgeons had resected all of the tumor. It was awesome to watch the anesthesists wake the patient up, and talk to her and move her to the hospital bed. I think the radiologist and I both had tears well up in our eyes at that point. After the patient left the holding area, right outside the room, the entire team broke out in full applause!

I've been kinda just emotionally simmering in happiness this weekend - so proud of all that we have accomplished. In some ways, I think that me having a pituitary tumor, having cushings, was all part of the larger plan. I honestly feel that being a patient myself, helped me manage this project. It feels so good to turn it over for clinical use.

Have a nice labor day everyone!
Minnie
