My pituitary gland stopped functioning when I turned 40 years old.  It took a long time to get diagnosed and tons and tons of tests to get the right diagnosis.  The only hormone I still get from my pituitary gland is ADH from the posterior of the gland.  I take replacement for everything else, and it will stay that way for the rest of my life.  No fun, but certainly better than the alternative.
