do you think the women in your family might have also had pituitary tumors, in addtion to mental illness. or perhaps the mental illlness was caused by pituitary disorders? my mother - who has suffered from anxiety a lot of her life - lost her period in her late 30's. I always wondered if in fact, the anxiety and loss of menses (and a host of other reproductive problems) was due to a pit tumor that went undiagnosed. she's 67, so I'm not sure how much the medical community knew about prolactinoma 30 years ago.
