----------------------------------------------------------- From: liltrubin Message 4 in Discussion Dear Kathie: I am sorry for what you are going through. I also have vision problems in my left eye. Failed the visual field and my doctors all also said it had nothing to do with the tumor. Have not been able to drive for a year now. I am 3 weeks post-op. I really cannot answer your question but I know the tumor affects our metabolism which also leaves us more prone to Kidney stones (my first was around 23 or so). The tumor can also affect our Thyroid, so I do not see why it would not affect diabetis. I know I developed insulin resistance and was on Metformin for awhile. I hope this helps and I will let you know if I find anything on it. Hang in there!!!! After being diagnosed six years ago with a pit tumor, this thing still rules what's left of my life! The tumor is currently 11mm. I failed a visual field test. My vision is being increasingly blurry (especially left eye where the most damage is shown). The eye doc did an extra test to show it was the tumor and not the diabetes I am now experiencing. (Said the pattern was different in both cases). I tried to get into Cyberknife at Kennestone with Dr. McLaughlin. While he is a wonderful man, very professional and caring, unfortunately, he does not specialize in pit tumors nor has a "team" to deal with it. I am trying to get into Sloan Kettering's Pituitary Center (Dr. Tabor). Has anyone had experience with them? Also, I have developed diabetes and my glucose is dangerously high (mid-300's to mid 400's). My PCP told me "don't worry about the tumor, we have to get the diabetes under control". I have already been taking oral meds for three years. He now wants me to start shooting insulin!! When I asked him if the diabetes can be caused by the tumor, he said no. I have NO history of diabetes on both sides of my family, EVER - siblings, parents, grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles. Yes, I am 53 and a bit overweight (thanks to being so exhausted I can barely make it through the day nevermind exercise) but I am far from obese. My diet is also not the most nutritious, but I do not drink soda, etc., salty or sweets - my big "cheat" is a cookie or two very occasionally!! He then told me my vision problems were from the diabetes even though I had to point out TWO times that he sent me to the eye doc of his choice and he did the extra testing - it's in my file!!!! Cyberknife won't touch me because they are hung up on the diabetes thing too and the fact the tumor isn't pressing on the optic nerve (shown in MRI) but I have vision problems! I am alone with my 16 year old daugher and am struggling to get by. I am currently on disability. Because of that, my church group (heaven bless them) decided months back they would take up a collection to get me through treatment/recovery. Since all this "ping-pong" doctor crud, interest is not as keen (as could be expected). I can't tell you how many times I've cringed through the "you don't look sick" line. They want to know if I had surgery/radiation, how soon I would be able to be healthy again. I have no clue. I can't even get doctors who know how to help me. Will I be able to go out six weeks after surgery and get another job? Will I be cured? If I have to have radiation - they told me six weeks/five days a week. How soon after surgery can I have radiation? How soon after radiation will I be totally back to health? I'm sorry there are so many questions. If any of you can share your thoughts, answers, stories, I would greatly appreciate it!! Blessings to you all!
