Hi, Kaylie, Good question! I thought, "If there aren't scholarships for tumor
survivors, therre SHOULD be." But Googling Brain Tumor and Scholarship, I got
22,300 hits. We have one member on Pit Chat who has a hissy-fit if we call a
Pituitary Tumor, a Brain Tumor (BT). But luckily for you, they are classified
as such. Anita doesn't like it, but most organizations follow guidelines to
that effect by the World Health Orgnazation (WHO), part of United Nations.
[NOTE TO OTHER MEMBERS: Many of these scholarships are also available to the
children of brain tumor survivors!!] Kaylie, two groups look like great
possibilities for you. Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation lists dozens of
scholarships. The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation also has a host of
scholarships. Two big BT organizations are merging, The Brain Tumor Society
and the National Brain Tumor Associattion (NBTF). Check out NBTF's "Resources"
PDF, Section 7, which includes a large number of possible financial programs
(such as the National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities) Some
are for a specific type of tumor, or for residents of one U.S. state
only. You'll have to rule out all those scholarships that specifically mention
Cancer, since a prolactinoma is seldom malignant. One suggestion: get your
school Guidance Counselor or parents to take charge of filling out the
financial aid forms. Many of us with Pituitary Tumors are bogged down by Apathy
Syndrome, which makes it difficult to deal with all the paperwork and calendar
deadlines. Mentally, they may be more capable of dealing with it than one of
us, with typically low Dopamine levels, would be. Are you a high school
sophomore or junior? Either way, get a 3-yr or 5-yr. planner at the office
supply shop. You'll want to list all those uncoming dates and scheduled events.
It pays to begin planning early. Good luck! Willard
