I've seen this also recently with a VMware-based image.  How much free
space is in your zpool?  When I experienced the issue, it seems that
some of the ZFS ioctls were returning ENOSPC.

If someone else doesn't beat me to it, I'll file a bug on this and
attach the truss output but feel free to do so yourself.
