There are those of us who wanted to do exactly that. And would have, given the opportunity. As you've already mentioned, patching is a big part of the problem - and the patch tools haven't been open sourced (and we have asked) so we can't do anything there, let alone fix Sun's internal patch processes. Actual availability of the source for the svr4 tools has been, um, rather patchy over the last year.
