Our error plumbing during installation and uninstallation is poor, so if this doesn't show up as part of the messaging, then I don't think you'll be able to discover it, though you might grep through the most recently modified manifests on your system to see what package deliver actions that "actuate" input-method-cache.
However, it's a bit odd that you don't have that service on your system. Make sure you have SUNWdesktop-cache installed. Bart -- do we handle the case where a service is delivered in the same install operation in which it's actuated? Could that be the problem here? Either that doesn't work, or there's a missing dependency, or both.
