Update Center currently consumes the name and description for an image, not an authority (since there isn't one local to an image yet). Having these is desirable though (issue 2339).

Regarding the other authority values, it would seem that mirrors and prefix are the only values that would be overrides of the data returned by authority/0. The rest of the values are local and/or unique to the image.

I would expect the information from authority/0 to be cached in the image so that tools could still operate on the image without access to the network (airplane mode).
