Could lines 504-530 be in a function in misc.py which could be used by
updatemanager?
Is there a situation where the initial position of vpaned and hpaned
should be adjusted if you resize the application to fit into the
available screen real estate?

John,
What is the test case to reproduce 5316 or 7679 as it now is?
Ok turns out I was in error, the problem I was seeing was due to
running this in a twin head display. The original bug reported in 5316
is fixed in the gate. I was getting back data from the screen real
estate calls that was mis leading me into thinking this was still an
issue.
There is an issue if you have a twin head at 800x600 and the other at
a higher res. The PM does not resize appropriately on the 800x600.
With the change I have put in place to allow the screen size to be
saved this is not a major issue and there is no way for us to get this
information via the Frame Extents, so will close out 7679 as wont fix.
So the webrev is only addressing:

Hi,
This webrev provides the ability to save the window size and the
position of the horizontal and vertical separators in PM. It also
handles display in 800x600 displays by correctly accounting for
available screen real estate (desktop panels, dock bars and so on)
and window manager decorations.
I've also changed the api used for launching gnome help to support
context sensitive help. Waiting for the final target ids before I
can close that one, will respin this webrev when I get them tomorrow.
