So the API just sets update_index directly, as necessary; why not do that
here, too? Ideally, the imageplan should be able to figure out when a

Ok, I can can switch and make repair just do what the api does.
We'll always need a variable because of the user --no-index flag.
Would you like to see it again or are you happy with it going back with
the change suggested?
