The other thing I'm wondering is if you all could be persuaded to
re-enable offline/local searching in packagemanager. Perhaps not by
default -- maybe it could be a setting in Preferences? Or perhaps in the
instance of a timeout, search could fall back on a local search??

The old offline search really isn't a viable option as explained below.

However, I can tell you that, in the future, the client will have access to more data locally that it could use for searches and 'local' search (e.g. pkg search -l) could search that.

At the risk of sounding nonconstructive, which I really don't want to
sound, packagemanager search used to be a useful tool to me. It's
feeling far less so with these recent changes. (Sorry!)

There's always a tradeoff.

For example, the old search required that users download around all of the packages manifest data first to be able to perform a search when you first started packagemanager or first add a new publisher/repository. That amounts to about 65-80 megabytes of data for a recent pkg.opensolaris.org/dev build.

In addition, it was extremely limited in what it could search for, and didn't support the same syntax as the cli.

Finally, you can still perform local searches, but only on installed packages. There should be an option in packagemanager somewhere, but I don't see it.

Cheers,
