Darren, all: Way much more could be gained (in space savings), if gcc would be used as the primary compiler, let alone additional compile time optimization flags for space savings. Alexander Eremin once made a test and pointed me to it. (At least) on x86 and amd64 the size of a gcc compiled /kernel would be circa 20% smaller (must look up my own tar archives from May), than the Studio ones.
