Pkg A contains a hardlink to a file in pkg B, and has a

The system should warn the user that a dependency is missing, and *leave
it to the user* to accept the consequences.
There's a bug covering this missing functionality,
http://defect.opensolaris.org/bz/show_bug.cgi?id=5786
so everyone participating in this thread should probably go voice
your needs in the bug instead, so it is recorded for posterity.
My bet is that once IPS leaves the lab playground and into the
production floor features such as this one (or equivalent
functionality) which are ugly but necessary in real production use
will soon be escalated into existence.
Exactly my thinking... :)
