There's an implicit assumption here that is wrong. That is, that the developers of pkg(5) have never been system administrators or been 'part of the real world' and therefore are designing a packaging system in some far-off ivory tower where form over function is king.

If so, that could not be farther from the truth.

The design of pkg(5) is not arbitrary, and is not based on fanciful ideas without "real-world" input. On the contrary, I believe it is the sum result of many experiences each member has had (as a systems administrator, through customer support, or work on the design and/or implementation of other packaging/installation systems inside and outside of Sun) and a great deal of thought and work that has led to many of the design assertions that the pkg(5) project follows.

I will not foolishly proclaim that all of the assumptions made are necessarily correct or that the design goals chosen are achievable.

However, I believe that the journey so far has been worth it, and that the core design goals of the project remain achievable.

Cheers,
