Changes from v3:
__remove_dirs has been removed from file_manager and os.removedirs used
as a replacement
the block comments in layout.py have been reworked based on the feedback
a new function has been added to layouts, "path_to_hash" which does the
opposite of lookup and walk in file_manager has been changed to use this
functionality as well.
