Thank you for responding.

When you say: "build bits that don't prune duplicate dependencies":

Are you referring to the build that is being updated, or the build I am
updating to?
Note that I am updating from 133 to 134(5).

Should I be reading your words above as:

The trouble is caused by upgrading _from_ a 133 on-nightly build, which does
not prune
duplicate dependencies.
This build can not be updated to a recent 134(5?) on-nightly build.

Or should I interpret them as:

The IPS bits in the target ("update to") build are not sufficiently new,
so the updater does not prune duplicate dependencies.
So the solution should be pull the tip from on-ips hg and try that.

So what is the recommended path to upgrade to the most recent 134(5) on-nightly
bits I am building from sources on pulled from the on-ips gate?

I was hoping that the updater would at one point become robust and smart enough
to deal with whatever old bits it finds on a system, and figure out what it
needs to to to update
to the then current bits.
