I discovered that the zpool version of my rpool is ancient (v14), and

Do I need to be cautious when running zpool upgrade of rpool? Should I
at least make sure my user files in /export/home are all backed up?
Obviously once you do the zpool upgrade, you won't be able to boot to
older BEs. I'm not personally aware of specific issues that would
require to backup /export/home although I think that's certainly always
a good idea.
