I share your doubts, and I like the idea of these additional scripts.

Also note that these should be runnable (at least) from the installed
Debian system!

How about this:

The default /root/.xsession contains a snippet like this.

if [ ! -e /root/.welcome-seen ]
then
  touch /root/.welcome-seen
  xmessage "Welcome to your new Debian installation. You have installed
a quite bare system at the moment. Please consider visiting
http://wiki.debian.org/DebianOnFreeRunner/Pills for an assorted list of
additional packages you might be interested in"
fi

And on that wiki page we provide the scripts you mentioned – or just
copy’n’pasteable lines as in:

For suitable Games, please run:

 apt-get install mokomaze openmoocow
