upon upgrade from postgresql-8.1 to 8.3 with pg_upgradecluster 8.1 main the postgis-database was totally broken. In my case, it was only a dump of the openstreetmap-database of bavaria, so I recreated it and it works now. I however had to execute /usr/share/postgresql-8.3-postgis/lwpostgis.sql to get it running before I could use osm2pgsql again successfully. I still have the original database around in case you would like to have a look at it.
