Indeed! The attached patch also fixes the FTBFS by simply fixing the bashism. Obviously the ampersand character ('&') in the line calling gcc has been interpreted by dash to run the compilation in the background and proceed with the script, which already checked the exit status and thus never realized that the compilation failed.
