How did you plan to handle old SVN packaging history?

It is not a trick question - I do have some ideas myself - several approaches that I have tried on other packages, but none of them without flaws, so I am genuinely curious how you'd do it.

In the past, I followed the instructions found here (+ some minor adjustments): http://wiki.debian.org/Alioth/Git#ConvertaSVNAliothrepositorytoGit

I remember that it was a success, I can pick a package and do a test if you agree.

Wauw - that is smarter than I've ever done before. Sure, go ahead - and no, you need not do a test, just roll them all like that, please!

And please do use signed tags and pristine-tar as much as possible.

Actually, one improvement I'd suggest over the one documented:

After the "initial upstream branch" commit close to the end, but before force-merging with master, please try apply all but newest upstream tarballs fetched using debsnap with "git-import-orig --no-merge".

I say "try" because I've never done so myself and am uncertain if it works, but if it does, we then are easier able to correlate not only our debian subdir but also upstream changes.
