i don't *know*, but some thoughts:
- B-D on a package that provides bz2.pc (unfortunately there is none in
Debian :-()


Yes ... There is none :(

- set the PKG_BZ2_CFLAGS, PKG_BZ2_LIBS variables before calling
configure. this is rather generic advice on my experience with
autotools+pkg-config; see "./configure --help" for more specific
instructions.


Unfortunately I am traveling now for couple of days :( Back on this in two
weeks.
