Yes. Sorry about that. Simulating a switch from 3 to 2 can be done
using
PREVLEVEL=3 debug=echo sh -x /etc/init.d/rc 2

The error you saw is not present in this log, and I am unable to
understand what went wrong. Are you using bash or dash as /bin/sh,
btw?
