I ran into the exact same problem, read the dialog and understood what
I need to do, but because the dpkg process had
a lock I could not initiate any purge actions in another terminal
until I ended the current process, which causes the dialog on the
screen to go away leaving no information in the log files.
After looking at the '/var/lib/dpkg/info/sysv-rc.postinst'
script it seems like the 'insserv' logfile is a good candidate to
save the relevant information regarding actions which should be
taken before attempting to migrate. Currently only information
from the migration itself is saved there.
