This reminds me of a problem I saw with HP Compaq 6910p and the Ubuntu installer. I had to use an external screen to see the installation output. I suspect it was a bug in the kernel triggered by the video card. I suspect this bug really is in the kernel, and only affect some video cards. Which video card are you using?
