My boot here goes like this:

1. bios screen
2. grub menu with the Debian background with the rocket
3. press return on the first menu entry
4. screen switches to black only
5. "Loading, please wait..." apears
6. screen switches to black only without nothing on it
7. after a while the gdm login screen apears with the Debian
   background with the rocket

The machine went ''dead'' (probably doing a loooooong fsck) after
point 6.

This reminds me of a problem I saw with HP Compaq 6910p and the Ubuntu
installer. I had to use an external screen to see the installation
output. I suspect it was a bug in the kernel triggered by the video
card.

I suspect this bug really is in the kernel, and only affect some video
cards. Which video card are you using?

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960
                                   Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0c)

My machine is a HP Compaq 6710b (which is eeriely close to Petter's intuition). Google tells me the Compaq 6910p has the same video
controller...

Hats off Petter!
