To be a bit more specific about this. I at least remember fsarchiver (backup
utility) to use /tmp as storage during backup creating temporary files (using
several GB, depending on the size of the partition).
Some of the download managers (like downthemall) use /tmp, if they download
files in multiple streams.
I remember dvd authoring software to create several GBs of data in /tmp. I'd
need to check the CD burning tools, like brasero or k3b, but I wouldn't be
surprised if they use /tmp, too.

For this type of data /var/tmp is not the right place.
