It has come to my attention that udisk-glue should be a lighter
alternative to gvfs and work with Xfce:

Beware that I have not tried it myself yet, so don't just blindly apply
without verifying that it actually works as intended.

I came to (some of) same conclusions testing it out myself now.
...but even more discouraging, when I wanted to file a bugreport against
udisks-glue to add an XDG file to auto-start it (for those environments,
including Xfce, which support XDG hint files), I saw bug#750511 where
the package maintainer (also being upstream author) recommends to drop
the package.
I therefore drop this bugreport - not worth the effort!
