Feelings aside, there is one kindof.. misconception about something being very stable forever. In a complex stack, things even when they are not touched they bitrot and get worse over time. Nowdays we actually get way more crash reports on X11 than Wayland and more reports of things just starting to behave kinda wrong, despite having much more users on wayland nowdays. (and yes, until we definitely kill it we do still address those issues) The fact is, even if we poured all of ourselves into maintaining the X11 session forever, the whole stack around us is bitrotting. Xorg is, and Xlibre isn't enough, becauseall the major graphics drivers are starting to have more and more x11-only bugs, they are just less tested nowdays. In other words: we just can't afford it, because the whole stack is moving on. All we can do is making the current technology being actively dewveloped, which is wayland work as good as we can, and to fix everything that is still problematic, while taking advantage of the many things we can do in wayland and we couldn't on X11 -- Marco Martin
