I have taken a deep look to OPAL, it was very appealing but after a while I
have realized that we shouldn't use this library.
For instance, It seems that its development has stalled:

Also, they defined their own file format. Now I'm thinking more and more on
using COLLADA. This file format seems to fit almost perfectly (the robotics
part will always be Gazebo-specific).

COLLADA file format has:

-An under development export plugin for Blender
http://colladablender.illusoft.com

-Support from the Bullets physics library that eventually will be merged with
ODE.
http://www.continuousphysics.com/mediawiki-1.5.8/index.php?title=Features

-Support in Ogre3D
http://www.ogre3d.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=13554

-Several libraries to parse it easily (look for collada-dom and fcollada)

-Nice future, it is been developed by the same team in charge of the future of
OpenGL. No doubt will become a widely used standard.

I strongly think that we must use COLLADA + extension for Gazebo specific
information.

This way we have support from the physics, the graphics and the add-on of
Blender as GUI for models and even worlds.
The models done by Blender should be later modified by a Gazebo-specific and
very simple GUI.
