Gazebo 0.8 is not compatible with 0.7. Porting sensor code from 0.7 to 0.8 should not be too difficult. Most of the code will remain the same. You will have to create a "controller" for the sensor. The controller maintains the libgazebo interface by acquiring data from a sensor and filling the relevant libgazebo structures with the information.
