Maybe the PicoBSD (FreeBSD on a single floppy-disk) could be used
for tests as well:

and that image comes quite far, e.g. that runs til booting the
kernel even (error log below, plex86 core-dumped).
Btw, I confirm your FreeBSD error-log, the same happens to me when I run
a 500MB disk-image with FreeBSD on (extracted from a running VMware
virtual machine).
