I'm not thinking about this very deeply, but why not improve tabular view with better HTML/CSS markup and contribute improvements back to core as a PLIP? That's one less product to maintain and everybody benefits from the improvements. These templates are, AFAIK, not really actively maintained, so as long as your changes are generic in nature, don't break anything major and sensibly architected, I can't imagine much objection. Could be a nice little 4.3 PLIP.
