Thanks for the suggestion. I tried updating the catalog in both the
old working 3.3.6 site and in the new 4.1.2. It did not help in
either case.

I did look in: /collab/uid_catalog/Indexes/Type

and there are only 2 entries there with portal_factory in the path,
they are:

portal_factory/Folder/admin
seminars/portal_factory/Folder/teatalks

So these seem to correspond well to the error message.

Unfortunately so far I can't think if any way to delete them
(or find them since /admin and /seminars/teatalks both exist as real
folders).

Since there are only two items, I wonder if there is a way to
identify and delete them in the ZMI interface?

You should be able to delete the entries from the catalog. Best is to do this not in the uid_catalog, but in the portal_catalog. I think that will also clear up the uid_catalog automatically; if not, then do the same manually in the uid_catalog anyway.

- go to portal_catalog in the ZMI

- tab Catalog

- Use the path filter to search for those two portal factory items; this should include the complete path from the zope root onwards, so somthing like /plonesitename/seminars/portal_factory. If you only have a few dozen items in your catalog you can of course simply browse the catalog.

- Check the item you want to remove and click the Remove button.

If this does not work, you may want to clear and rebuild the portal_catalog. This can take a long time if you have lots of content though.

- In the portal_catalog go to the Advanced tab.

- Click the Clear and Rebuild button.

- Grab a coffee or go out for lunch if this is a site with a few gigabytes of data. :-)

Oh, make sure you have a proper backup of the data just in case anything goes wrong; but you should have that already.
