I have now received this from Alan. With Alan's .pscairo file I also get 
the typecheck error, so as we suspected it is not a ghostscript issue,
but a cairo / fonts issue. My experiments with Debian testing worked
fine so I conclude it must be a cairo issue which depends on which fonts
are installed. Whether it is missing or bad fonts is hard to tell.
