I got success!  See
http://lists.cairographics.org/archives/cairo/2007-December/012187.html . I
now get good results for all pscairo examples by applying three patches (that
are expected to be in the forthcoming cairo-1.4.14) to cairo-1.4.12.  So the
problem is solved other than the expected delay in propagating these fixes
to Linux distributions and elsewhere.

Big personal sigh of relief here since I am using pscairo extensively
in my research work.
