If I can make it work, I would like to make one further change to
plimagefr - I would like to add grid -> plot coordinate callback
support in the same manner as supported by plshade(s), plmap and
plmeridians.  How soon does this have to be completed to prevent
breaking an assumed fixed API on plimagefr?  It could be added as a
3rd plimage* function, but I think that may be overkill.  plimage
should still work on top of this modified plimagefr with the
transformation function fixed as pltr0 (I think that's the identity
transformation function...).  This functionality would be personally
useful, as well as making plimagefr a more direct neighbor to the
plshade functions.

I will start with the plshade* functions to see how this is handled in
those cases.  Any suggestions on pitfalls to watch out for?
