Hi Hazen:

I get a segfault on example 23 with the latest (revision 9790, "Implemented
alternate unicode text handling..." cairo.c.

c/x23c -dev pngcairo -o test.png
Segmentation fault

The segfault goes away and cairo results look fine if I revert back to the
previous version, (revision 9774).

The revision 9790 issue appears only to occur for example 23. That example
(when run with revision 9774) has a missing glyph warning message:

(process:3573): Pango-WARNING **: Error loading GPOS table 5503

so I am wondering if the revision 9790 issue is a problem with handling
that warning for your centralized unicode text handling.
