I believe I have seen the symptoms you describe for an early version of
qtwidget that did not have plflush implemented.  Here is the list of device
drivers that currently do have plflush implemented for their interactive
devices:

drivers/cairo.c
drivers/ntk.c
drivers/qt.cpp
drivers/tk.c
drivers/tkwin.c
drivers/wxwidgets.cpp
drivers/xwin.c

You will notice that wingcc.c is currently missing from the list.  Until
that oversight is fixed, example 17 will not work properly for that device.
Is that the one you tested?
