The CMake-based build system for our installed examples shows such builds are possible, but I do agree it is (necessarily) a complicated example because of the many different languages that we support for our 30+ standard examples and the extensive test system we have implemented as part of that build system. A much simpler tutorial build system concentrating on one simple PLplot application written in a single language (say C++) would be a better way to teach users about this possibility. Once they figure out the tutorial build system, it should make it much easier for them to figure out what is going on for the CMake-based build system for our installed examples for the language they are interested in (if that is not C++). I don't have time to take on this small project myself, but if somebody volunteers to do this I would be happy to help with any questions that might arise concerning what should be removed in our CMake-based build system for our installed examples to create such a tutorial build system for PLplot applications.
